Recently I posted something on the forum regarding Rhyming Dictionaries (did you see it?). Anyway, if you'd asked me when I was young if I'd plan on being a writer, I'd have laughed at you. I was going to SING! Who knew then that I would write children's stories, songs. reviews, articles, blogs, and class curriculems, among other things.
As a writer I've found that I use my rhyming dictionary constantly, to the point where it's starting to come apart. I've looked around and the best one I've found is the Oxford English Rhyming Dictionary. Surprisingly it's far better than the Websters rhyming dictionary - who'da thunk?
On the other hand my thesaurus is fabulous and it is a Websters. It's big, heavy, complete and I lug it around with me where ever I go (My rhyming dictionary goes to) as well as at least a notebook or two and any number of pens and pencils.
On the rare occasion I'm at some fancy party - I did say rare didn't I? - I ALWAYS NEVER NOT carry my hand held tape recorder in my bag. Now I grant you I don't carry one of those bags that is barely big enough for 1 credit card a greenback and my keys. I use a fishing bag (green canvas and leather) that is stuffed full. For me function is far better than beauty. But hey, you never know when inspiration is going to strike. You may hear a snippet of conversation or see something that inspires you and if you're anything like me, you'd better get it down NOW before your distractions get distracted! So that's when I pull out my trusty tape recorder and get it down on tape. That way I have it for when I do get a chance to flesh it out.
If you're feeling blocked, low or just don't know where to go, turn to your trusty tools of life, get going and keep those creative juices flowing!
