Like so many folks, I’ve got a real love affair with the “Old West”. I love good westerns (books and movies), and good cowboy songs. What I’ve just realized today however is this; though there a few standards - I Ride an Old Paint, Sweet Betsy From Pike, Home on the Range - there reallly isn’t much in terms of cowboy music for kids.
Actually, what got me to thinking about this was my son was playing an Ian Tyson CD I Outgrew the Wagon . For those of you who don't know him, Ian was part of the duo Ian & Sylvia in the 60's and he is one of the premiere cowboy singer-songwriters in the last 50 years.
The song Adelita Rose, written by Tyson, came out of the speakers and I found myself thinking “Gee, what a really nice song for kids…”
It’s a song/lullaby about a little girl, Adelita Rose, who keeps getting out of bed and her daddy’s gentle admonishment and explanation of why she needs to go back to sleep.
Tyson is a wonderful songwriter and storyteller with a knack for pulling people in as they picture in their minds eye the scenarios he paints.
There are many other cuts on this CD that are appropriate for children. My boys LOVE this CD! But Adelita Rose in particular fits the bill of ‘children’s song’.
Enjoy it!
