This is a play based on the fairy tale Cinderella. In this version, you will see things from the stepsisters' point of view. Cinderella is not as perfect as everyone thinks!
The play consists of 1 act, and is about 1/2 hour to an hour long. This is an excerpt from the play.
The Stepsisters (Charlotte and Amy) and their mother have just returned from a hike through Mud Swamp with the Flowers and Footsteps Hiking Club. Cinderella declined their invitation to go with them, explaining that she didn't want to get dirty.
Act I, Scene III:
CINDERELLA is on a chair, dusting. Enter AMY.
AM: Oh, Cinderella, we had the most wonderful time, it’s too bad you didn’t come.
CI: My stepmother told me to stay home and dust.
AM: Why, Cinderella, Mother wanted you to come. She begged you to come. You said you didn’t want to. You said there might be bugs. ( Pauses and eyes CINDERELLA dubiously ) Don’t you remember?
CI: Stepmother said-
Enter CHARLOTTE.
CH: What did mother say?
AM: I don’t know, but I can tell you what she’s saying now.
CH: (looking impressed) Wow. You can read minds?
AM: No, she must think Hubert is deaf, because she’s talking as loud as possible.
CH: I can hear her, too.
SM: (offstage) Hubert, you must stay to dinner. And you, too, Agnes, George.
CI: (horrified) Agnes! Not that woman who talks of nothing but trees? She dresses like she was raised by wolves!
CH: Agnes is nice. And so is -
CI: George! That horrible man with the spotty tie?
AM: George isn’t horrible, and he doesn’t always wear spotty ties. Sometimes he wears stripy ones.
CH: Or squiggly ones.
AM: Or that one with Tony the Tiger on it.
CH: Didn’t he get that one out of a cereal box?
AM: Yeah-I never knew that you could get a tie out of a cereal box.
Enter STEPMOTHER.
SM: Hubert, Agnes, and George are staying for dinner. Oh, Cinderella! How thoughtful of you to do all this work! Charlotte, Amy, have you thanked your stepsister?
AM, CH: (mutter) Thanks.
Both STEPSISTERS look at their feet.
SM: (laughs) Next thing I know, you’ll be making dinner!
AM: Or sweeping the floor.
CH: Or scrubbing.
CI: Excuse me.
Exit CINDERELLA.
SM: Such a dear girl. I’ll come with you!
Exit STEPMOTHER.
CH: Stuck up prig.
AM: Mother simply dotes on her.
CH: The servants have already cleaned everything anyway. It’s not as if there’s any real work to do.
AM: She’s such a neat freak.
CH: Did you know Prudence has had piglets again?
AM: Really?
CH: Do you want to come see?
AM: Of course! Let’s go!
Exeunt CHARLOTTE and AMY. End Scene.
